Nearly from the day Whisenhunt took over as head coach of the Cardinals, it seems Leinart has been in the dog house. Despite some solid performances over the past few years and the fact that future Hall of Famer’ Kurt Warner was stealing the spotlight until this season, Matt still hasn’t been able to step into his own w/ the coach.

Poor Maturity Display

Recent comments made by both parties leave a bit to the imagination, but logic should tell you that they just don’t see eye-to-eye. The coach, in fact, seems to be the one w/ the most credibility coming out of this whole situation because of the way he’s communicated throughout this process, as well as his history w/ other players including current running back Beanie Wells.

Matt Leinart is coming off somewhat as a scorned lover… A guy who’s had everything go his way his whole life until making it to the NFL in 2006. While I have no doubt that the guy has put in a lot of work over the years, his comments about not being told why he was no longer the starter are inaccurate at best… he even said so himself before the demotion.

Give the Guy a Chance

The sad thing here, especially as a fan of the AZ Cardinals, is that I don’t really feel like Leinart has been given a fair shot at actually showing he can be a top NFL quarterback. Whisenhunt yanks him the first time he does something wrong, so I really don’t blame Matt for playing it somewhat safe in the first 2 preseason games. Sure, he didn’t move the ball down field fast enough, but the whole team shares that responsibility – not just the QB. The offensive line was terrible. Matt has not been given a full season in 5 yrs w/ the Cardinals to show what he can do. The coach keeps stating that a “body of work” is the reason for the demotion, but we’ve yet to really see one to be honest.

Where Does Matt Leinart Go From Here?

Reports are abound now about where Matt Leinart might get traded to, but nothing is in concrete. Among these rumors are the NY Giants, Buffalo Bills (no-go) and Oakland Raiders (no-go apparently).

Soccer is by far the most popular sport overseas, garnering millions in revenue for its different leagues and their teams, players, owners, and sponsors. In England, the infamous football gangs–die-hard fans with the deepest level of obsession possible–will kill each other over their teams’ outcomes. They travel in hoards to visiting stadiums, wreaking havoc the entire way and vowing to cause bodily harm to the rival club. This kind of passion–and in no way am I advocating violence, here–is absent in America in terms of soccer.

Football guys and gals tailgate the hell out of their team’s season. Basketball enthusiasts can rattle off stats and scores from games years ago, and baseball junkies have a knack for being superstitious, just like their favorite players. So why isn’t professional soccer catching on in the U.S.? Many “traditional” sport followers argue that watching soccer is boring: the players fake injuries and are rewarded for it by their coaches, the game clock is just kind of an estimation for when the competition starts and finishes, and, well…the United States usually isn’t very good at it on the international stage. We are a country that is no stranger to embarrassment, but in the worlds of sport, we usually dominate. Despite the league’s growth, it still has an inconceivable distance to go before it reaches a respectable level of popularity, which is mostly dependent on America changing its attitude.

Firstly, MLS was founded in 1993. That’s seventeen years ago. I was seven years old. I don’t remember my brother, a soccer enthusiast then and still to this day, ever mentioning one thing about the league’s birth back then. Second, I live in a city with an MLS team–Seattle Sounders FC–and they’ve got quite a following, but the stadium in which they play is also home to the Seahawks, the city’s NFL team. In order for the stadium to appear full, the entire upper nose-bleed sections all the way around have been covered with graphic-paper-fabric stuff. The Seahawks SUCKED last season, and they still drew a bigger crowd than the most popular sport in Europe? Damn. What do loyal soccer followers have to do to get a bone these days?

Advertising - ESPN and all its subnetworks need to devote at least one prime time show to MLS–not just international soccer. I hate to say it, but America is a nation of bandwagon-ers. If ESPN is all over it, I guarantee more people ready to adopt a team or sport into their hearts will start making the advertising investments worth it. Visuals are everything.

National and international network support: become a monopoly. Our gut instinct always tells us that competition is good; it motivates everyone to continue working toward excellence. In this circumstance, MLS needs to be the premier soccer league in the US by being the only soccer league in the US. This will create a distinct path for up-and-coming all-stars to get into the pros with limited constraints. With baseball, basketball and football–the three most popular sports in the U.S.–there is a clear road from youth participation to the pros. The level of competition in the NCAA for the major sports is unmatchable for that age group, and you won’t find college athletes arguing with you unless they’re Lebron James and just skipped that whole scene in the first place. But he could–that’s the kicker (pardon the pun). The league currently has a less-than-efficient way of harvesting home-grown talent, which is a major fan-booster. If Americans want to watch a sport, it’s because we kind of want to watch what could have been ourselves, not some hot-shot from Spain…no offense.

Obviously MLS isn’t going anywhere since it’s survived this long. But for its popularity to grow, the place to start reconstruction will be in the terrifying trenches of marketing and advertising. If the league can garner some more big-name support….

GOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL-aahh!

Start With the Basics – Correct Golf Grip

First of all, as with anything, you have to start by looking at the very basics. Is your grip correct and firm, or has it slackened a little and is that affecting your swing and causing the scooping? If your grip is in order, then is it a matter of your posture? Are you keeping all the fundamentals in your mind as you go to hit the ball, or are you forgetting how important good golf posture is? People who are scooping the ball tend to put their weight on their back foot and keep their front shoulder low. Pay attention to your posture and try again, and see if that fixes the problem. Be sure your weight is distributed evenly and focus on having a smooth transition between top of the backswing to the forward swing, with a clean finish.

Align Your Wrists

Lastly, if both your grip and posture are ok, then what you are probably neglecting is alignment. If your wrist is not properly aligned, then it will result in a scooped ball. What you want to do to correct this is to bow your forward wrist in when you make impact with the ball. Perhaps counter-intuitively, to avoid scooping the ball you want to hit the ball with a downward strike, not an upwards one, in order to get it up in the air and give it some spin.

In addition to changing or tweaking what they are doing physically – pay attention to the grip, assume the correct posture, keep proper alignment, etc. – what helps many newbies to correct their scoop is to also change how they are thinking of it mentally. Many new golf players think they have to help the ball get in the air with a little extra sweep and so they tend to envision a “U” shape in their mind and swing accordingly. In fact, in order to avoid scooping the ball what you should keep in mind as you swing is that you want to make it a “V” form, not a “U”. Make that simple change in your mind and that should help quite a lot.

Also keep in mind that you always want to hit the ball while the club head is traveling in a downward motion, not going back up. Remember what your golf club’s loft is for, and make sure you are taking advantage of it, not trying to do all the work yourself.

My favorite college football team is the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Don’t be so surprised, believe it or not, the Deacons actually have a pretty good football history and just a couple of years ago lost a tough bowl game in the Orange Bowl. With a winning bowl record and several former Deacons having gone on the play pro football, the Deacons are a small school with a solid tradition.

When I like to sit down and watch the Demon Deacons on satellite tv from www.BestChoicetv.com, the thing I really like is the current coach, Jim Grobe, and his approach to the team and the game of football. He’s done a lot of work to ‘do things right’, and he has built a program that is always competitive, even though the college is one of the smallest in the BCS.

Like many coaches around the country who aren’t a perennial powerhouse, coach Grobe has to find and recruit players who can be developed into stars and contributors, even when they might not have looked like those kinds of players while they were still in high school. He also has a program, which I really like, of trying to redshirt all incoming freshman, which means that on average, the team is older, stronger, and more mature. It is not very often that a freshman football player arrives on the Wake Forest campus and plays his first season.

When people talk about NASCAR, they often think about the big names of people who win a lot of races. When I think about NASCAR, I immediately think about Jeff Gordon because he is my favorite NASCAR racer out of all the other talented racers that compete against him.

Jeff Gordon has had a solid career, and has won the NASCAR Winston Cup, which is now known as the Sprint Cup, four times. He has one of the best pit crew teams that help keep his car ahead of the others, and he is an excellent driver behind the wheels.

When I watch NASCAR on my tv that I got through directv promotions in Alabama, I immediately start looking for Jeff Gordon’s car among the pack. It is usually easy to find his car because he has always had the “DuPont” sponsorship on his car, and because he is usually somewhere in the front of the pack.

Gordon’s career earnings also show why he is so fun watch on television, and why he is my favorite NASCAR driver. He is the first driver that has ever surpassed $100 million in pure winnings because of the Cup series he competed in back in 2009.

For all these reasons and more, it is pretty easy to see why I and so many other NASCAR fans have chosen Jeff Gordon as our favorite racer amongst the competition.

• Last year it was Cliff Lee joining the Phillies in a mid-season trade, only to send him off packing before the start of the 2010 season. Lee will make around $9 million this year.
• Earlier this year it was the trade for ace Roy Halladay, who has yet to disappoint in Philadelphia. He even had a perfect game this year and is worth every penny of his contract.

And now, as the trade deadline looms and teams are readying for the post-season, the Phillies once again go out and acquired a star pitcher – Roy Oswalt from the Houston Astros.

Update: Oswalt will make his Philly debut today (Friday) against the Washington Nationals.

The kicker… Oswalt is to make approx. $15 million this year and he was reportedly asking for the 2011 option year to be picked up by whichever team he was traded to. R. Oswalt spent his entire career in Houston, who drafted him in the 23rd round (684th overall)  in 1996 (source).

Cliff Lee has not declined, and in fact has been a stalwart in the American League w/ the Seattle Mariners before being traded (again) earlier this month to the Texas Rangers who are pushing strong towards a division title & the playoffs. The Phillies were even rumored to be in the running to re-acquire Lee again before he ended up w/ the Rangers.

I think at this point, besides the fact they are trying to win, you’ve got to ask their management what in the hell is going on? Why didn’t they just hold on to Cliff Lee in the first place? They could have had Lee at almost 40% less than the cost of Oswalt for potentially this year & next if they re-signed him again.

The arrival of Roy Oswalt in Philadelphia will greatly shape the pennant race in the National League – Philly is now the TOP team in the National League and has a great chance to advance to the World Series.

This gives them arguably the best starting rotation in all of baseball and most certainly the best trio of starters in Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt and Cole Hamels. Imagine facing these guys on consecutive nights in the post-season?? Most teams would cringe at the thought.

After searching and getting denied by as many as 4-5 other teams already this off-season, Terrell Owens finally landed with a team. He will reportedly be paid about $2 million in salary with some other incentives kicking in if he hits certain milestones throughout the 2010-11 NFL season. The milestones aren’t out of Owens’ reach, but he didn’t achieve the required stats last year w/ the Bills so he’ll definitely be calling for the ball a lot now.

The pairing of Terrell and Ochocinco is an odd one, but as workout partners for the last few years and both having their own VH1 reality shows, I’m sure they know each other well and can make the deal work out in the Bengals’ favor.

According to Warren Sapp of the NFL Network, Owens has already requested (paid) Antonio Bryant to give up his #81 jersey number. Owens previously wore the #81 jersey in San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia and last year w/ the Bills.

From a jersey sales perspective, expect Terrell Owens’ Cincinnati Bengals jerseys to sell pretty well. He has been on the top jersey sales list each of the last 2 years – ranked #11 in 2009 w/ Bills, and ranked #17 overall w/ the Cowboys in 2008.

It remains to be seen exactly what other moves the Heat will make to build a full-fledged roster that can compete for 48 minutes each of the 82 games that the NBA regular season demands.

All three players – James, Chris Bosh & Dwyane Wade – will all have a lot of pressure on themselves now to deliver. With all the negative feelings with him moving on to another team, they’re going to have to produce results quickly.

The final key piece before all the other free agents start getting targeted by teams looking to fill their holes?

LeBron James is to decide his future tomorrow at 9PM (EST) on ESPN. Once James declares his destination, expect a slew of smaller deals to start happening much more quickly. Everyone has been waiting for the Top 5 (or so) guys to sign and everything else should start falling in place.

The question in James’ case is… Did he wait too long to declare? While he could certainly still go to Miami, New Jersey, NY, Chicago or even stay in Cleveland, he’s no longer what everyone else is waiting on.

Miami Improves Moderately

While Miami improves, their roster is somewhat scarce and they are looking to make even more moves to free up more money for free agents. Michael Beasley could be on his way out if the Heat can find a taker for him.  The addition of Bosh helps, but they really need to fill a few more holes to be considered a top competitor in the Eastern Conference. I would still rate Miami behind Cleveland, Boston, Orlando and Atlanta with Chicago challenging.

Knicks Make Splash, But Are They Improved?

New York on the other hand, is about as barren as the Phoenix desert (now minus Amare too ironically). They lack a point guard, center and essentially replaced David Lee with Amare Stoudemire – not exactly a huge upgrade. I think they should try re-signing Lee and letting them split center duties for the first season, while they wait for additional opportunities to add to the lineup next year.

There’s still a lot of time for things to shake out, but it looks like a couple teams are going to be “losers” in the sweepstakes for the top-tier free agents. Unless he signs with them, the Chicago Bulls and New Jersey Nets are going to have a lot of cap room to spend, but on who is the question?
