NASCAR Enacting Double-Wide Restarts
Fans have spoken and NASCAR listened – double-wide is the way to go (avoid the easy fan jokes here). Starting in Pocono this weekend, restarts during the race will no longer be single file and lapped cars will not be up front w/ the leaders.
The race leader will have his choice of positioning on the front row – top or bottom – but the 3rd place driver will be on the bottom in the 2nd row. Lapped cars will be moved back and the Lucky Dog rule still applies throughout.
The sudden change is intended to replicate some of the excitement that was seen at the All-Star race. Fans want to see harder racing and the lapped cars out of the leaders’ way. The move gives the top drivers a chance to compete w/ the leader and draft w/ a partner more quickly – they’ll have a choice of drafting w/ the guy in front or the guy on the other side pretty quickly once the restarts begin.
