Former Coach, Broadcaster John Madden Retires

17 April 2009 7 views No Comment

Forever the face of the popular video game, John Madden Football, former NFL coach and broadcaster John Madden has officially retired from the sport he helped build into the most popular of them all.

With approximately 40 yrs overall involvement in the NFL and football in general, Madden has made a lasting impression on millions of people over the years.  As a coach w/ the Oakland Raiders in the 70’s, Madden was quite successful, winning the Super Bowl in 1977.  John Madden’s profile/history

Following his coaching career, John Madden joined Pat Summerall on CBS/Fox to cover the NFL games as a broadcaster.  The pairing became the league’s best announcing crew (arguably) before dis-banding in 2002 so Madden could join ABC’s Monday Night Football.  He continued there until 2006, at which time he moved to NBC w/ partner Al Michaels to help cover Sunday Night Football.  NBC analyst Chris Collinsworth is expected to fill John’s seat on Sunday night games in the upcoming season.

Madden has worked for pretty much every sports network, including: CBS, FOX, NBC, ABC and ESPN.  He has literally touched the lives of everyone he has worked with and developed quite a loyal following of NFL fans.  John even became so famous (and odd at times), that comedians developed entire routines around the Madden persona – most notably former Mad TV star Frank Caliendo.  With Madden’s retirement, Frank may be the only bumbling, goofy Madden voice we hear from this point forward.

Despite John Madden’s awkward analogies and often times straight nutty commentary, he was a great announcer for football and the NFL… here is one fan who will miss him.
