Gene made a huge impact on the livelihood of past and current NFL football players. There are some arguments that he didn’t increase pensions enough for players from the early days, but he’s stated that they’re making more now on their pensions than when they played. Sure, they put themselves through a lot of pain and suffering as a result of playing, but they ultimately chose to play – much like a coal miner chooses to go into a shaft, risking his life so we can make electricity or use our BBQ on Sundays. On the other hand, yes the old players helped build the league, so they deserve something…. millions no. As the head of the NFL Player’s Union, Upshaw has helped mold and develop the NFL’s union to be on par with other top sports. Some people hated him; many people loved him. He was a tough player w/ the Oakland Raiders and will be remembered by teammates and coaches forever. Our prayers are with his family…
