The 2010 Team USA basketball jerseys were showcased this week and will debut at the World Basketball Festival in August (in NYC). The jerseys are supremely designed by Nike and have some advanced techno features that will make them very comfortable for the NBA players expected to suit up in August.

Uniform Details/Features

The Team USA jerseys will once again feature the “aerographics” on the back, which is just a clever way of saying “a pattern”.  This feature does more than look cool, they actually keep the player cooler via small perforations/air ducts in the pattern itself. The pattern itself, which you can see in more detail below, is a torch w/ a flame and surrounded by a  tribal art(?) design.

Nike even upgraded the basketball shorts to make them more comfortable and “airy”, lightening them overall and adding perforations (again) in the sides to help regular the player’s temperature, etc. Really fancy, technical mumbo jumbo for most of us, but they should turn out well for the USA team.

Thanks to Nike’s new Hyperelite design, the shorts are about half as light as a normal basketball short when dry. Get them wet like, you know, from sweating during a game and they’re even better, weighing less when soaked (10.1 oz.) than a normal pair does when dry (13.6).

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the list is the Bucks’ Andrew Bogut, but if you watched their games and saw the improvements he’s made over the past year or so, you’d know he deserved to be here – plus, it’s not like there were any other centers who qualified.

Notables that missed the cut include: Chris Bosh, Rajon Rondo, Chauncey Billups, Carlos Boozer and David Lee. No one else can really gripe too much that they didn’t make it.

In a landslide, James proves that he is once again the NBA’s most valuable player.  It’s no coincidence either, that his Cavaliers look to be the best in the league and poised to reach the NBA Finals and compete for the NBA Championship.

Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant is the only other player to receive a 1st place vote (4) to challenge LeBron for the award. The Lakers’ Kobe Bryant finished a distant 3rd, followed by Dwight Howard and Dwyane Wade at 4th & 5th respectively.

King James will have a different look next year (#6 jersey) and perhaps a new team. I can’t recall a league MVP moving to another team the following year… Knicks fans can still hope I guess.

Four-time NBA Champion and 2008-09 NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant has retained his status as the top-selling NBA jersey in Europe, a title he also held for the 2007-08 season.

Considering Bryant’s enormous popularity in China during the 2008 Summer Olympics, it’s not really a surprise to see him dominating the European region as well.  Many fans based in the United States have a love/hate relationship with Kobe (you either love him or you hate him), while overseas, he’s generally reveered as one of the game’s greats – there is little negativity or ‘hate’ thrown his direction.

Perhaps the most surprising name on the Top 15 list is the Bulls’ Joakim Noah.  Althought Noah was born in the United States, he is of French/Swedish decent, which would explain why Europeans are buying his jersey.  Considering his play, however, someone might want to check what’s in the water over there…

By my count (& I could be wrong), 7 of the Top 15 are of European decent (more directly than Noah).  So NBA players born in the United States are still more popular – including 6 of the Top 10.  Not too surprising, especially considering that 4 of the Top 5 are legitimate MVP candidates each year – Bryant, Garnett, James & Wade.  Their exposure on TV and through various marketing channels both national & internationally helps maintain/grow their popularity.

The Magic have a couple tricks up their sleeve, including a special weapon, but they may not need them if the Lakers don’t show up and give it their all. In addition, it appears that guard Rafer Alston is over his reduced playing time and Stan Van Gundy has realized that inserting Jameer Nelson so early & heavily in the series was a mistake.

The Magic woke up on offense, setting shooting records left & right in the victory, while the Lakers looked the bit of a tired team, relying on their talent alone to win. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough on Tuesday as the Magic held LA off in the 4th enroute to the victory. Led by Michael Pietrus, the Magic withstood the Lakers comeback attempts numerous times. Pietrus’ defense was also impressive on Kobe Bryant, who appeared visibly worn in the loss.

2009 NBA Finals – Game 3 Highlights, Interviews & Twitter Buzz

Could Bryant’s energy level be an indicator of a problem for the Lakers or do they have enough in the tank to win 4 games against a hungry & young Orlando team? Certainly, LeBron James couldn’t carry the Cavs by himself and likely suffered from such a busy offseason basketball schedule (USA Basketball), but Bryant may suffer the same fate if he is unable to convince his teammates that the NBA Championship is as important to them as it is to him.  Side note.. Speaking of the Cavs, they are reportedly interested in Rasheed Wallace and is Coach of the Year Mike Brown on his way out?

In Orlando, Dwight Howard and Co. hope to serve notice to the Lakers, as they did to Cleveland, that they are a serious contender for the NBA Championship and their presence is fully warranted & deserving of the Lakers’ respect.  A Magic win will turn the series in their favor and set them up to possibly take the series lead on Sunday (again in Orlando).  Btw – the 2-3-2 format is total BS.  The better team deserves the homecourt advantage – not heading home for Game 6 in a possible 3-2 hole (if the home team one each game).

The NBA didn’t go all defense, however, as the top 4 scorers in the league all made the first team squad:

• Dwyane Wade – 30.2 ppg
• Lebron James – 28.4
• Kobe Bryant – 26.8
• Dirk Nowitzki – 25.9

Wade was voted into the first team for the 1st time, while Bryant and Nowitzki were both selected their 4th times, respectively.  For James, who was listed on every first team ballot, it is his second appearance on the All-NBA team. Dwight Howard was also nominated for the 2nd consecutive season.

Of the 5 selections, Wade is the only player already eliminated from the 08-09 NBA Playoffs, while Dirk could be joining him as early as tonight (they trail Denver 3-2 in best of 7 series).  Howard, who’s Orlando Magic suffered a devastating loss last night after a horrible 4th quarter, could also be joining Wade on the “I’ve started my summer vacation” list.

2008-09 All-NBA Second Team

The All-NBA second team consisted of New Orleans guard Chris Paul, Brandon Roy of the Trail Blazers, Tim Duncan of the Spurs, Paul Pierce of the Celtics and Houston center Yao Ming.

2008-09 All-NBA Third Team

The third team has Denver’s Chauncey Billups and San Antonio’s Tony Parker at guard, Denver’s Carmelo Anthony and the Lakers’ Pau Gasol at forward, and Shaquille O’Neal of the Suns at center.

James has been the favorite to win the MVP since March, despite strong efforts from Dwight Howard, Kobe Bryant  (2007-08 NBA MVP) and Dwyane Wade.  Those four players essentially made up the entire competition for the award.

Fitting in his MVP season, Lebron James is the only player in NBA history to lead his team in the following stats (all in one season): Points, Rebounds, Assists, Steals and Blocks.  Think about that for a second… he led his team in EVERY single statistical category, with the exception of perhaps 3-pointers and free throw shooting.  This means Lebron was everywhere – doing everything to help his team win.  Most 24 yr olds are too busy trying to be cool, whereas this kid has the maturity (& swagger) to do it without even trying.  James is an exceptional role model for young athletes and other aspiring NBA players.  He is proof that, if you play hard every minute and you play team oriented ball, you can succeed.

2008-2009 NBA MVP Voting

Lebron James easily won out over fellow players Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Dwight Howard and Chris Paul.  Receiving over 90% of the first place votes, King James tallied 1,172 total points in the voting.

Accepting the award in his hometown of Akron, in the area he grew up in, Lebron continued to praise his team and suggest that individual awards come when your team wins.  Making the players around you better and playing hard were the messages highlighted by the much-deserved NBA star.

Kobe Bryant is again the star for the Lakers, but he’s got a lot of help this year.  Even after cementing his legacy with his 1st MVP trophy last year, Kobe has a lot to prove – he wants a ring w/out Shaquille Oneal.  His on-court attitude has changed dramatically since the beginning of last year and he continues to entrust his teammates and deliver for his team when it is needed.

The Lakers’ supporting cast includes no less than 3 potential All-Stars in Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Lamar Odom.  Ok, so Odom won’t be an All-Star off the bench, but he could start for an Eastern Conference team and easily make it to the game in PHX this year.

LA’s big frontline is complimented by Jordan Farmer, Derek Fisher and Trevor Ariza.

The Detroit Pistons are hoping that the recent trade of Chauncey Billups to the Denver Nuggets for guard Allen Iverson will pay dividends towards the end of the season and in the post-season.  This writer at least, believes the Pistons made a huge mistake and will see their playoff & championship hopes fade as quickly as Kwame Brown turns the ball over each time he touches it.

Close to the halfway point of the game Friday night, the Pistons lead the Lakers 51-40.  Detroit is lucky to be ahead, but I expect the Lakers to come back in the 2nd half and win their 8th straight.  This team is hungry to get back to the Finals and is not going to let Kwame and Iverson beat them on their homecourt.  Wow, a great showing by the Pistons in LA – getting the win and giving the Lakers their 1st loss.
