LA Dodgers Should Skip on Manny Ramirez, Use Money Elsewhere

J-Jerseys Admin | MLB | Sunday, November 16th, 2008

Baseball News from L.A. Times

Cash that would go to the free-agent outfielder could be used to shore up team in other ways.  Scott Boras was right, the Dodgers failed to make Manny Ramirez a “serious financial offer.” Continue reading on L.A. Times

Dodgers Defeat Phillies 7-2 in Game 3 - Lead Series 2-1

J-Jerseys Admin | MLB | Monday, October 13th, 2008

Baseball News from L.A. Times

Blake DeWitt’s three-run triple is the key hit in a five-run first as Dodgers take Game 3 on a strong outing by Hiroki Kuroda and cut Philadelphia’s series lead to 2-1. Teams nearly brawl in the third inning. The Dodgers revived their World Series hopes tonight by defeating the Phillies, 7-2, in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series at Dodger Stadium, thanks largely to a five-run first inning. James Loney hits a grand slam, Manny Ramirez and Russell Martin add homers and Dodgers win second playoff game since 1988.

CHICAGO — James Loney’s grand slam led the Dodgers to a 7-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday in the opening game of the National League division series.

The mighty Cubs are taking it on the chin from the Los Angeles Dodgers.  Having won both games so far (thru Thursday) against the NL leading Chicago Cubs, the Dodgers are about to show the world that they belong in the NLCS and possibly the World Series.

Led by Manny Ramirez and Co., the Dodgers have made a huge comeback since the beginning of August.  The team is more relaxes, less stressed and playing at a high pace that the “cursed’ Cubs are struggling to compete against.

Dodgers in Playoffs - First-round Opponent Undecided

J-Jerseys Admin | MLB | Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Baseball News from L.A. Times

It could be the Mets, Phillies or Cubs, but East Coast weather could delay the end of regular season. Now that the Dodgers are champions of the National League West, they will open the playoffs Wednesday in …

The Los Angeles Dodgers completed their rise to the NL West crown earlier this week when the Arizona Diamondbacks were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals. The division championship comes on the heels of the Manny Ramirez trade in August and the fall of the D-Backs, who appeared to have the division in-hand throughout the season. In the end, however, the pressure of the Dodgers resurgence appears to have been too much for the young Arizona team to compete against.

The Dodgers should get a lot of credit for saving their season, which undoubtedly was a failure for new manager, Joe Torre, at least until the Ramirez trade. The Dodgers plain sucked - they couldn’t score and their pitching was questionable. Adding Manny to the lineup changed everything. Suddenly, the team could put up runs and give the pitchers some breathing room. Batting averages are up across the board and Ramirez is a legitimate candidate for National League MVP, but will likely lose it to Albert Pujols, who continues to showcase his incredible skills in all aspects of the game.

A Dodgers/Mets match-up would surely be interesting, but it will only happen if New York can avoid a dramatic failure for the 2nd year in a row. The Phillies would be interesting as well, since both teams are similar. The Cubs are stronger on pitching and offense, so I think this series would be short-lived.

LA continues to solidify their position on the NL West division title w/ each win and Arizona loss.  The teams have reversed roles recently, with the D-Backs going on a major skid and the resurgent Dodgers pushing towards the postseason.  Manny Ramirez is a big difference maker for LA, but credit must be given to the other role players, including the pitching and coaching staffs.

Manny Ramirez Powers Dodgers Past San Diego; Closer to MLB Posteason

Baseball News from L.A. Times

He hits a pair of two-run home runs as the Dodgers extend their NL West lead to 3 1/2 games.

Manny Ramirez hit two two-run homers, giving him 524 for his career, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 7-2 on Wednesday night.

Manny Ramirez continues to tear up the National League, after being traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers a few months ago.  Ramirez, a legitimate MVP candidate for the NL, even though he’s only played in a handful of the Dodgers games, continues to push LA into postseason contention.  With a recent 3-game sweep over the (then division leading) Arizona Diamondbacks, the Dodgers have asserted themselves as a team to beat in the National League - just in time too.

Dodgers Move Past D-Backs Into 1st Place

J-Jerseys Admin | MLB | Saturday, September 6th, 2008

Baseball News from L.A. Times

L.A. takes over lead in the NL West by pounding Brandon Webb again. Manny Ramirez has five RBIs in the Dodgers’ seventh win in a row.

I am a D-Backs fan and this weekend’s series against the Los Angeles Dodgers was supposed to be our “coming out party”, our chance to show that we belong in 1st place.  Unfortunately, the teams & players don’t agree with me as evidenced by the Arizona Diamondbacks failure to keep 1st place in their division after two straight losses to the rival Dodgers.

Brandon Webb got beat again; not a good trend.  The D-Backs just can’t seem to put together offense when they need it & the pressure of a playoff berth has seemingly been too much for them to handle.

One game is left to play Sunday, but it could already be too late.  The damage to the minds of the D-Backs players could be permanent.

I guess we should just feel proud to have had the lead for most of the season, despite some of our shortcomings.  I mean, when Stephen Drew is your top player and being mentioned in MVP races (what were you thinking FoxSports!!), you probably aren’t that good.  Still, I have hope that this young team will stay competitive to complete the season and come back next year even stronger, regardless of where they finish in the standings this year.

Manny Ramirez is already a big hit

J-Jerseys Admin | MLB | Saturday, August 2nd, 2008

Baseball News from L.A. Times

Slugger makes an impact at the box office.

Escorted by six security guards and Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda, Manny Ramirez made his way to a podium set up behind home plate at Dodger Stadium on Friday, the dozen or so cameramen around him impeding his movement.

Manny didn’t drive in any runs in his first appearance as a Dodger, but he was 2-4 w/ 2 singles.  Unfortunately, the team lost to the D-Backs.  Not quite the performance of Jason Bay in Boston, but solid nonetheless.  For the Dodgers, trading for Manny was a great move - it should payoff as the rest of the season progresses.

Interesting stat… after joining the Dodgers, Ramirez is immediately their team leader in home runs, RBI’s and runs scored.  That says a lot about how crappy L.A. has been this year.

Boston Trades Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers

J-Jerseys Admin | MLB | Thursday, July 31st, 2008

Manny Ramirez Trade Details:

They give up two minor leaguers, including Andy LaRoche, in three-way deal involving the Pirates. Jason Bay goes to Boston.

The Dodgers acquired outfielder Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox today in one of the boldest trade deadline moves in their history. More

Manny Ramirez (AP Photo/ Steve Ruark)Oh My!!! The Boston Red Sox have traded superstar outfielder Manny Ramirez across the country to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Often temperamental and unpredictable, Ramirez went through one of his regular season “I don’t wanna be here” syndromes and Boston finally took action.

Boston will front the remaining $7 million for this season of Ramirez’s contract, so the Dodgers get a HUGE impact player for almost nothing.

I believe the trade instantly improves the Dodgers in a weak division, which looks winnable now w/ this move. The D-Backs are there only real competition and they haven’t made a move, so the Dodgers leapfrog them in my opinion.

There was a 3rd team involved in the deal, the Pittsburgh Pirates, who traded outfielder Jason Bay to Boston.

Wow, I really don’t see how the Red Sox lose a step at all w/ this trade. Bay will step in right away and they shouldn’t miss a beat.

The Pirates are surely just dumping salaries, as usual, and can be expected to suck ass for at least another year. Might want to check the GM’s head after this one… he was basically a pawn for the Red Sox & Dodgers. Does he know they still suck?

As a D-Backs fan, I am excited now… the division race gets more interesting, a player I like will play in AZ several times more now (vs. virtually never before). I love the move by Boston.
