New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was back on the field and throwing the football Thursday with no apparent problems from last year’s knee injury. Continue reading on NFL.com
After shipping off their replacement quarterback to the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots are certainly excited to see their franchise QB Tom Brady back on the practice field. Brady, who was out all of last year w/ a knee injury, is the Pats best chance at returning to the Super Bowl and winning a title. His injury last year immediately opened up the field, which was previously a sure-shot for New England to hold the Lombardi Trophy.

The New England Patriots announced Thursday that they have placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on quarterback Matt Cassel. That means Cassel can sign with another team, but the Patriots would receive two first-round draft picks as compensation. Continue reading on NFL.com
This was probably the best move the New England Patriots could make in regards to a) keeping Matt Cassel or b) receiving value when he leaves. Cassel had a super season subbing for the injured Tom Brady, narrowly missing the playoffs at 11-5.
Matt Cassel was a surprise to most, having played sparingly at USC behind Matt Leinart and then in New England behind Brady. Ironically, it is Cassel who will is getting playing time and a big-time contract, while Leinart sits on the bench in AZ behind Kurt Warner, who is expected to sign for 2 more years.
By slapping the franchise tag on Cassel, his pay immediately increases to average with the highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL. At more than $14 million per season, however, the Patriots cannot afford him to be their backup. So in this case, they either trade him and receive the two (2) 1st round draft picks or they trade Tom Brady and that ain’t happenin my friends. It will be interesting to see how this plays out during the offseason.

The New England Patriots have put running back Laurence Maroney on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, ending his season. Continue reading on NFL.com
Bad news for the New England Patriots that Maroney will be out, but I’m sure last night’s drubbing of the Denver Broncos will provide some relief. Sammie Morris and the other running backs didn’t seem to have a problem against the Broncos defense, so they should be ok for the season. With Tom Brady already out, there Super Bowl chances are shot - the loss of Maroney shouldn’t make too big of a difference.
Fantasy football owners should be looking at Morris as a possible replacement or search their waiver wires for available running backs.

Initial reports on Sunday indicated that Tom Brady would be out for the 2008-2009 season, and Monday those rumors were validated. The reigning NFL MVP has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the NFL season.
For all you fantasy owners out there, this is a HUGE loss to your teams and we feel for you. Ok, maybe not so much, but it always sucks to lose your top pick this early in the season. Get on the waiver wires or start looking at trade scenarios, because Brady isn’t playing again and shouldn’t be taking up a space on your roster.

The New England Patriots released 36-year-old safety John Lynch Sunday, just 16 days after signing the 15-year veteran.

If John Lynch was to play in the 1st game of the season, the New England Patriots would’ve had to pony up extra cash based on the contract signed only 16 days prior (I don’t know the amount off hand).
By cutting Lynch now and perhaps waiting until after the 1st game of the season, the Patriots look to save money while still getting a quality player for the team.

The New England Patriots are on the verge of completing the unthinkable… going undefeated in the regular season and tying the 1972 Miami Dolphins.
Facing the Miami Dolphins (ironically) in week 16, the Patriots jumped out to a large lead and coasted to their 15th straight win. Their final game, next weekend, will be in New York against the Giants. This is hardly a gimme, but the Patriots will be the favorites. The only question will be whether or not coach Belichick sits his regulars in the regular season finale.
With the team coasting into the playoffs, it would be stupid to risk injury to your star players. However, quarterback Tom Brady is on the verge of setting a new single season NFL record for touchdown passed - he’s currently at 48 TD passes, only 1 behind the record held by the Colts’ Peyton Manning. Wide receiver Randy Moss is also on the verge of breaking the record for most touchdown receptions - he trails the legendary Jerry Rice by 1 touchdown heading into the final game.
Before we get into all the records that New England has already broken this year, take a look at the most popular Patriots jerseys below:
Ok, sorry… here are the NFL records that the New England Patriots have tied or broken already this year:
- NFL record for most touchdowns in a season
- Highest regular season point differential
- First team to start season w/ 15 straight wins
- Tied record for most regular season wins
- Brady-to-Moss most pass/catch TD combo in single season
The Patriots have exceeded all expectations this year and they’re doing it in a record setting style. Give praise to Belichick, his staff, and the players on the team for putting together such a remarkable run. Whether you like New England’s team (or coach) is irrelevant… this is history baby!

Former superstar and sometimes bad boy Randy Moss appears to have turned the corner since joining the no-nonsense New England Patriots. After breaking into the league as a cocky wide receiver from Marshall, Moss has struggled to maintain his image and the way the league’s players and coaches see him. It’s only one season, but Moss and quarterback Tom Brady are tearing up the record books and leading the Patriots into the playoffs as Super Bowl favorites. Randy appears happy and is helping the team win, something that you can’t really say about his time in Oakland.
As the NFL playoffs near, the time to get your Randy Moss jersey is now (before they win the championship). Show your support for the Patriots by picking up a Moss jersey and wearing it proudly:
