Lions Pick Matthew Stafford No. 1; Jets Trade Up for Mark Sanchez

J-Jerseys Admin | NFL | Saturday, April 25th, 2009

The NFL Draft took place this weekend and their were a lot of big picks, trade-ups and trade-downs.  In perhaps the biggest draft trade, the New York Jets traded up to get quarterback Mark Sanchez out of USC - the Cleveland Browns gave up the pick to move down (which they ended up doing several times).

Matthew Stafford’s mission is daunting: Lead the Detroit Lions back from the only 0-16 season in NFL history. Mark Sanchez has nearly as big a challenge: He’ll compete for a chance to replace Brett Favre as the New York Jets’ starting quarterback.   Continue reading on NFL.com

The trade to pick Sanchez and the Oakland Raiders surprising pick of WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (out of Maryland) were the primary newsmakers of day one.  The Raiders picked the fastest guy, as they often have done under Al Davis, but they passed up on Michael Crabtree, the NCAA receiver of the year.  Crabtree was selected 10th by the San Francisco 49ers, who were extremely happy to pickup the star receiver so late.  He has a bit of a “me first”, cocky attitude, which is why he fell so much, but he should excel in SF as long as they quarterbacks can get the ball to him.

The Jets meanwhile, have been in love w/ Sanchez for awhile, but trading up was still a surprise.  Sanchez will replace the retired Brett Favre in New York, but will hopefully have some time before he’s pushed into a starting role.

The Detroit Lions picked first and had Matthew Stafford lined up as the w/ a contract prio to the draft.  He got a huge undeserved contract, considering he’s not taken a snap yet, but the Lions are hopeful he can revive their franchise.  Daunte Culpepper should be the starter to open the season, but don’t be surprised if Stafford gets put in before the end of the season… both from a financial pressure situation, but also because they will likely have a losing record and the fans will be calling for a change.

Brett Favre Retires (Again) From Football

J-Jerseys Admin | NFL | Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Football News from NFL.com

Brett Favre told the New York Jets on Wednesday that he was retiring after 18 seasons, ending a record-setting career in which he became one of the NFL’s all-time greats.   Continue reading on NFL.com

One of the NFL’s real “good guys” is apparently hanging up his cleats (again) in New York, as quarterback Brett Favre announced his retirement from football on Wednesday.

Considering his past history of waffling and backing out of retirement once already before, I’m not going to buy into this until the first official game of the 2009-10 season starts and Favre is not on an NFL roster.  There are many opportunities for him to play, so if the right one opened up, I can’t see him at least not considering it.

Last time Brett retired, he sobbed, he whined and he looking back I think it is apparent that he was (attempting) to leave for all the wrong reasons.  This time around, the excuse is that his body is wearing down and perhaps he doesn’t have the urge to go through another full season.  This one is easier to buy from Favre, but I still insist that we should wait until the NFL season starts before calling his career over.

Brett Favre, Jets Hand Titans First Loss of the Season

J-Jerseys Admin | NFL | Monday, November 24th, 2008

Football News from NFL.com

Brett Favre threw two touchdown passes, Leon Washington ran for two scores and the Jets routed the Titans 34-13 on Sunday, snapping the 13-game regular-season winning streak by the NFL’s last undefeated team.   Continue reading on NFL.com

Brett Favre and the New York Jets defeated the previously unbeaten Tennessee Titans on Sunday in convincing fashion.  The offense and defense both played an exceptional game against what was supposed to be a strong Titans running game and defense.

Sitting at 10-0 before the match-up, the Titans went into the game on a pretty good high.  Unfortunately, the Jets run defense stuffed Chris Johnson and Lendale White only got a single carry (-1 yd).  What was once a strength for Tennessee, has suddenly become a problem against the both the Jets and the Chicago Bears, who are stout against the run.

The Jets have now positioned themselves well for a playoff run, but Tennessee will be there too considering they only have 1 competitive game remaining on their schedule.  If they meet again, I’m sure the game will not be so lopsided.

Brett Favre, Jets Rock Out Old School Titans Jerseys

J-Jerseys Admin | NFL | Sunday, September 28th, 2008

New York Jets Brett Favre in retro New York Titans jerseyThe New York Jets on Sunday, showcased some retro NFL jerseys against the Arizona Cardinals. Based on the results of the game, the Jets may want to consider playing in the old school Titans jersey (blue/yellow) more often. The jerseys looked totally awkward on the typically “green” Jets players, but the performance of Brett Favre (career high 6 TD’s) and the Jets defense make a strong argument to keep on playing in the New York Titans jerseys.

The team has made the special New York Titans jersey available in most players’ names/numbers.

Check out a sampling of the retro jerseys below. Most qualify for FREE SHIPPING & these are the best prices you’re going to find.

Brett Favre’s Ankle Still Sore, But Expected to Start for Jets This Weekend

J-Jerseys Admin | NFL | Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Football News from NFL.com

Brett Favre was listed as questionable Friday for the New York Jets’ game against Arizona with a sore left ankle, but is expected to start against the Cardinals.

The ageless wonder that is Brett Favre continues to amaze as the quarterback of the New York Jets. While the team hasn’t performed up to what expectations were - especially after the 1st game, Favre has looked like… Favre. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes erratic.

This week, the Jets will lineup against the Arizona Cardinals, who are also fighting for an identity and looking to prove pundits wrong. The Cardinals are continuously looked at as the NFL’s annual loser - they haven’t won anything in their entire existence. With a hobbled Favre and good mixture of offense and defense Sunday, the Cardinals could start the season 3-1 and put the Jets in a 1-3 hole; neither of these were expected by the respective team’s fans or the analysts.

The Jets will have to run the ball effectively with Thomas Jones, but also get good decisions and solid plays out of Brett Favre. The AZ defense will make the QB pay if he is not careful with the football.

Game prediction:
AZ 24, NYJ 20

Packers Trade Brett Favre to New York Jets

J-Jerseys Admin | NFL | Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Brett Favre has been rumored to be going to either Tampa Bay or NY for a couple of weeks now, but it’s official - Favre is now a member of the New York Jets.

Chad Pennington Released

With Favre’s arrival in NY, the Jets wasted no time in releasing Chad Pennington, who has struggled with injuries his whole career. With Brett Favre’s $12 million contract entering the books, New York could no longer afford Pennington’s contract.

Brett Favre Joins New York Jets - 8/7/08

Favre will step in almost immediately, although he did miss tonight’s game (obviously). The Jets have several capable wide receivers, a good running back and a solid defense, so the trade for Favre looks like an improvement for the Jets’ faithful. That said, this is an entirely different offense than Brett Favre has played for the last umpteen years, so he has to learn a new playbook in a very, VERY media critical New York market.

Packers Move On

The Packers get rid of the issue and get to move on w/ QB Aaron Rodgers for their future, so it looks like a positive on all ends. Green Bay fans, however, sure wish Brett was still playing for the Packers.

Favre’s Fantasy Impact

Fantasy-wise, I think Favre is going to take a hit. He doesn’t know the offense, so he’s going to be throwing a little bit shorter for awhile until he learns it. His lack of understanding will no doubt lead to an increased number of interceptions also, which is not something the Jets can afford to do - they will have a hard enough time winning games when he plays well.
